Little bit of this, a little bit of that

Good Morning and, yes, that was me who slipped outside the front door this morning (ouch)!

There was a time (I guess it was when I was in school), that snow days were fantastic. It snowed, we had off from school, what could be better?
Then I realized all these snow days made for a longer school year. Then I started to drive. Soon, I started to work.
Don't know exactly when that turnover happened, but, yeah, I hate snow. Unless I'm up the mountains and can ride a sled down a hill. Now, that's cool.
Speaking of being dumped on, how about those Denver Broncos!!
OK, somehow I get the feeling this Super Bowl just didn't get anybody excited. Yes, Seattle and Denver were the two best teams in the league this year. Yes, it was a classic matchup of Denver's No. 1 offense against Seattle's No. 1 defense. Yes, you had the whole Peyton Manning thing and the New York thing and the Seattle 12 thing.
Yeah, there was all that, but, come on, it was Denver against Seattle. Outside of Denver and Seattle, does anybody really care about these two?
It's like those years of classic wrestling when S.D. Jones would hit the ring.
The difference is the announcers were better back then and nobody cared about commercials.

Rise and Shine --- Much ado...

Good Morning and welcome back to the Internet!

OK, I have a confession to make, I lip-synced yesterday's edition. I wrote it much earlier than was posted and pulled it out when the national audience was ready.
A lot of people might think that is wrong, but, so I wouldn't look bad by making a huge mistake, I felt the lip-syncing was warranted. People expect the best out of me every day and, with the Super Bowl coming up next week, the extra pressure was just too much.
I promise it will only happen on occasion and I hope this won't sway you from reading.
In other big news, it's cold. In Pennsylvania. In January.

Rise and Shine --- It's a marathon

Good Morning and welcome to the day after!

You know, going into Super Bowl Sunday, I knew it was going to be a long day. Usually, it's spent cooking a nice spread, then watching the game and putting everything back together.
This Super Bowl Sunday, though, was a little bit different. We were trying to put together our own show, getting as many people involved along the way as possible.
So, with the help of Sligo in Media, we set up in the corner and started broadcasting across the internet.
A couple of hours into it, we knew this was a daunting task. With our panel of experts - Jack McCaffery, Bob Grotz and Anthony SanFilippo - we went head first into a long day.
Ever try to talk for five hours straight? Ever try to figure out a topic that might or might not be interesting?
I have a renewed respect for those talk radio guys who go through the night without any calls.
Now, on to the next one...

Rise and Shine --- Super ... Ouch

Good Morning and welcome to the greatest week Ben Gay ever had!

After a full day of sledding and shoveling, the Super Bowl seemed like it would be the perfect elixer to end the day.
Watching the Big Game (as they like to say when they don't want to pay the NFL) with four non-football fans makes it, well, kind of interesting.
The biggest question of the day wasn't, 'Who's going to win?' It was a tie between 'Is this over yet?' and 'Can we watch Spongebob instead?'
Hey, at least there were some entertaining commercial spots this year to fill in between the boring stuff.
After a couple of years of too much Budweiser, Geccos and talking Babies, there was some imagination out there this time around.
I thought the David Letterman/Oprah/Jay Leno spot and the Careerbuilder.com Casual Friday ad were funny. I also laughed out loud at the Betty White/Abe Vigoda snickers ad.
In highly scientific voting at the Super Bowl party, though, there were three clear winners. So, since the game wasn't as exciting, here you go with the top three:
3. Dorito's Tim's Locker: CLICK here to see it
2. Kia's Toys dream: CLICK HERE to see it
1. Google. CLICK HERE to see it
Now, the three worst (once again, highly scientific voting procedures)
3. Denny's
2. Emerald Nuts
1. Bridgestone
What do you think?

Rise and Shine --- Steely resolve

Good Morning and welcome back to the '70s!

Well, it turns out it might have been better the Eagles lost to the Cardinals in the NFC Championship game. If the Eagles have shown anything over the last decade, it's they don't handle in-game adversity well. A guy runs back an interception return for 100 yards right before halftime? Well, it wouldn't have been close from there on out.
Then again, the Eagles don't have a receiver like Larry Fitzgerald, who is simply unstoppable.
More important than the game (which really was kind of boring until the final six minutes), are the commercials. This year's bunch, well, like the game, were pretty boring. There weren't any breakout ads that everybody will be talking about today.
Sure, that one where the people have different pets is kind of funny, but doesn't hold up after the first viewing. Budweiser has to re-invent itself. Horses just don't pull the weight any more.
Then again, it's not like the NBC coverage of the game was groundbreaking. John Madden needs to retire. He's become one of those announcers who state the obvious about five minutes after it happened.
NBC did set one mark, though, the absolutely worst post-game interview of all-time. Enjoy, or cringe:

Rise and Shine --- Super Bowl?

Good Morning and welcome to the end of the week!

Well, we made it through again. A week down, a weekend ahead, time to clean the house... or watch the Super Bowl.
Maybe it's all the bad economic news we are bombarded with every day or maybe it's just because the Eagles should be there instead of the Cardinals, but the Super Bowl has a little less luster this year.
In years past, Super Bowl parties were all over the place. It was like another holiday where people got together, ate too much and watched (commercials?) a football game.
This year, with the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Arizona Cardinals, maybe there's a little less interest. Maybe not. If not, here's a quick guide to a Super Bowl party.
A fun way to have a Super Bowl party is to mix food (and drink) from both cities.
This year, you can show your Pittsburgh pride with a case of Iron City Beer (if you can find it) and Primanti Brothers sandwiches.
For those not in the know, a Primanti Brothers sandwich is a Pittsburgh tradition and takes some getting used to. Basically, you get some good, thick bread. Slop some mayonnaise on the the bread, top with some artery clogging Kolbassi, cheese, cole slaw and french fries, then eat. It might not sound good, but you have to try it once. When better than the Super Bowl.
Arizona is a little easier. A bit of southwest cooking, maybe a crab enchilada with spicy tomatillo sauce would work. Add some nachos and a heat lamp and you might even be in Arizona.
So, get the menu together and veg out and watch the commercials.
Speaking of vegging out and commercials, this PETA ad will not be shown during the Super Bowl, although there will be plenty with shooting and goofy people:

RISE AND SHINE

GOOD MORNING DELAWARE COUNTY

It's a wet and somewhat slippery morning out there, so be careful taking the young ones to school and getting to work.

Well, it appears Super Bowl Weekend is kicking off in, well, annoying fashion. There are a lot of people down at the Wachovia Center watching a bunch of guys eat.
Sounds like a good way to spend the morning.
On second thought, I'd rather have a stomach ailment.

Anyway, the Super Bowl has morphed into a big party day, with the game becoming background noise. The biggest buzz seems to be about the commercials.
One question: If businesses are doing so bad, how can they spend millions for 30 seconds of airtime?
While there have been some good ads over the years, most end up like the game itself - disappointing.
There are some classics of course and here are five that stand the test of time.
Mean Joe Green and the kid
Apple 1984
Larry Bird and Michael Jordan play H-O-R-S-E
Frogs learn to talk
David Letterman and Oprah are a match

Do you have another favorite, let me know at onlinedelco@gmail.com

Enjoy the game, enjoy the parties, enjoy the commercials and have a great weekend.
