Rise and Shine

Good Morning gentle readers!

So, to take a break from anything serious this weekend, we rented the movie 'School of Rock' with Jack Black. It's kind of funny, definitely better than other Jack Black movies. It's also kind of neat to think all the students in the movie played their own music. Something many adult 'groups' can't do any more.
Here's the trailer

Anyway, as part of the DVD extras was a music video for the 'big' song in the movie.
Sitting there with the boys, we suddenly realized they had never seen a music video.
Now, if you grew up in the 80s or 90s, music videos were as much a part of the song as the actual music.
MTV was the biggest thing on the air, but when they actually played the music. Everybody who was anybody had a music video. You couldn't sell the album or single without the video.
They started out simply as the band or singer just jumping around and such, but quickly became mini-movies. It culminated with Michael Jackson's Thriller, which actually was a movie.
I remember when that video was going to debut. We all rushed home from school to check it out. MTV scheduled it to run every few hours and you knew the schedule.
So, since MTV no longer actually shows videos, it was off to an Internet search for some of those classics. Now, they are funny and the boys were bored after about five seconds.
They didn't get the point. Questions came about the meaning of the video, what they were doing in the video, why they weren't playing the music, etc.
I guess the time has passed. Still, it was fun while it lasted.
Here are a couple of good ones:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning weekly warriors!

Well, it's getting ugly out there and I'm not talking about a Saturday night Phillies game.
Politics, thanks to our new (improved?) 24 hour news cycle, the Presidential election is already mucking up the mud.
Over the last few weeks, Republican John McCain's campaign has run commercials saying Democrat Barack Obama is to blame for the gas-price problem. Obama has also been compared to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. Today, there's a story with McCain saying he's taking the high road and not talking about race.
Obama, in a speech, said the McCain Team was using his race and name to sway voters. Here's what he said: "You know, 'he's not patriotic enough, he's got a funny name. You know, he doesn't look like all those other presidents on those dollar bills, you know, he's risky."
McCain's response: "Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck. It's divisive, negative, shameful and wrong."
Really, though, this election is all about race. It's also about economics, war, gas prices, taxes, home ownership, schools and everything else that runs our lives.
So, let's not pretend we are something we are not.
If Hillary Clinton was going to be the Democratic candidate, the other side would be putting out stories about how she should stay in the kitchen and take the children to soccer practice.
Don't take the high road when you're already in the sewer.
By the way, most aren't really interested in politics anyway:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning everybody from Marcus Hook to Monterey (and everybody in between)!

There is a trading deadline in Major League Baseball today. To some, it's a national holiday, to most it's just a shrug of the shoulders.
Since the Phillies have never really made a big deal at the deadline, it's understandable why there isn't much interest in multi-millionaires leaving one team for another. The Phillies are always happy with what they have and sit on the sidelines watching other teams improve for a chance to win a championship.
Seriously, though, do you blame Phillies ownership when you really think. They are packing the stadium nightly and selling a ton of hats, shirts, whatever. Winning a championship won't sell more tickets. Winning a championship might sell more hats and T-shirts, but that money is shared among teams.
So, be happy, Phillies fans, to watch a team every night. Just don't worry about taking a vacation day for a parade in October.

Speaking of parades, apparently they are shutting down a part of Center City this afternoon to celebrate the Philadelphia Soul's Arena Football League championship. Which, of course, got me thinking: Aren't there enough parades already?
We have the Mummers, Easter Columbus Day, St. Patrick's Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and many other parades in between.
Actually, maybe we need more parades. After all, there is a parade on the highways every day. How about adding a marching band to the morning and afternoon rush? Why don't we follow all those Aqua PA construction vehicles around with a car full of clowns?
How about a weekly Saturday morning parade? I'm sure U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak (D-7) would be interested.
Let's shut down Baltimore Pike in Springfield every afternoon for a home-from-school parade.
Or, there could be this:

Good Morning and stay in the air conditioning if possible today.

All of a sudden, California doesn't look so good. First there are fires all over the place, then an earthquake hit Los Angeles. Now, they say 'THE BIG ONE' may be on the way. Wait a minute, perfect weather all year? OK, never mind.

So, we have the Rolling Stones playing concerts while pushing 70. The Who (Roger Daltry 64, Pete Townshend, 63) are coming to the area this fall. Van Halen toured last year in their upper 50s. John McCain, 71, is running for president Now, there's word out that Cheech, 62, and Chong, 70, are going to reunite for a movie.
Well, I guess it's real, we can all forget about retirement. Although, Cheech and Chong were funny in their day, I don't know if their comedy floats these days.
Let me know what you think:

Good Morning everybody (especially those waiting in line to audition to be the next American Idol)!

Just in time for high school juniors to seriously think about their next step, the Princeton Review came out with its annual list of college rankings.
CHECK IT out here.
While the Review ranks colleges in everything from academics to the social scene.
Of course, the list that really gets the pub is the top party schools in the country.
All the usual suspects are there (Florida, Penn State, West Virginia, etc.)
Now, I don't remember these lists all those years ago. It was probably out there, but the Internet wasn't around, so the news didn't come as quickly.
Anyway, is there really a difference in the partying from say Florida, which is ranked No. 1, and Swarthmore? OK, there is probably a difference there, but in the grand scheme there really isn't much difference between Florida and Pittsburgh. Having visited one and attended the other, I have some first-hand experience.
If you are looking for a party at any college, chances are you'll be able to find one without much trouble.
Meanwhile, MIT is ranked No. 1 for students who study the most.
So that gives you a range. The bottom line is students have to find the school they like best. Outside rankings don't mean much when the school year starts.
By the way, these rankings and those that take the time to compile them leads to another thought:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning out there!!

Hope you are enjoying your Monday morning. That cool temperature makes it ever so bearable as the summer hits its stride.

By the way, apparently the Philadelphia Soul won the Arena Football League championship Sunday.
It appears to have been met with a big 'Oh Well.'
Sure, it's exciting for those involved with the team. They can now jack up ticket prices next year and put up billboards with Jon Bon Jovi's smiling mug next to a trophy.
Other than that... whatever.
Remember, the Philadelphia KiXX and Phantoms each won championships in the last few years. Let's not forget the Wings and Freedom. All won titles, but it doesn't take away from the failures of those other teams.

Meanwhile, the Olympics get underway next week in China.
Is it just me, or is there no real buzz for the Games.
The big problem happened a few years ago when the powers that be decided to change the schedule allowing for Olympic Games (winter or summer) every two years. The build up disappeared and the Games now seem to be every year.
Sure, there will be some exciting performances, but, like this weekend's championship, there is no Soul.
By the way, here's a cool look at what we are missing:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning faithful readers!

Well, despite what the calender says and even though the temperature keeps pushing near triple digits, it is apparently fall already.
The Eagles are playing football, which many believe is the biggest story of the year. More disturbing, though, is the stores are stocking school supplies.
Didn't school just end? Wasn't it only a month ago we were ditching old papers and putting the books away?
Apparently, that's been long enough. There are sales all over the place. We are being drummed in the head if we don't purchase those No. 2 pencils today, there won't be any left come September. Get those folders or your school children will be stuck with 'High School Musical 2.'
Hurry up. Come quickly. Get it done.
It seems we are always looking to the next thing instead of just enjoying today. We wake up on Monday and wish it was Wednesday. When Wednesday comes, we wish it was Friday. Sunday starts the cycle all over again.
'Just get me through today so I can get to tomorrow.'
When tomorrow comes, we rush through it. Time speeds past us before we even know what to do with it.
Here's an idea. For today, just take it minute-by-minute. It's a perfect summer day outside.
Stop and smell the roses.

Good Morning everybody, especially those stuck sleeping in the Philadelphia Airport!

That was some impressive lightning out there last night. The sky was lighting up like it was the middle of the day, that is if the middle of the day lasted about two seconds. It's nice to watch this kind of nature from a distance of the safety of a window.

So, the director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute issued a memo yesterday linking the use of cell phones with an increase in brain cancer.
Here is Dr. Ronald B. Herberman's memo in full. Here is a related story.
If this is true, maybe we should rethink the need to be 'in touch' all the time. A day doesn't pass without seeing people walking around, driving, and, yes, even riding a bike, while talking on the phone.
Are these calls really that important. I even saw two people sitting at the same table in a restaurant a few weeks ago and each were talking to different people on cell phones.
Take it a little further and imagine the damage those ear things can do to your brain.
When you see people blow through a stop sign because they are talking on the phone you already know cell phones can make you stupid. Now, they can kill you.
So, what do we do ... Sorry, phone is ringing.

Good Morning, gentle readers!

So, the heat will break today. While most of us expect heat during the summer and just deal with it as part of living in Pennsylvania during the summer, it will be nice to turn off the air conditioner for a couple of days and open the windows.

Meanwhile, for those who don't think the world is heading down the river without a boat, click on these stories:

A Rhode Island man had a blood-alcohol level of 0.491, the highest ever measured on someone who wasn't dead

Keep the bathing suit on, Part One.Apparently a water slide at Hersheypark can become, well, X-rated

Remember when using the bathroom was just using the bathroom? It appears some people have taken the toilet to the extreme

Keep the bathing suit on, please, Part DeuxYou better look right if you want to attend this nudist resort in France. The government will be checking.

Good Morning all you coffee (and non-coffee) drinkers!

I remember long ago on a very hot day, I was driving around with my Dad when we saw a guy walking down the street with a hot cup of coffee. I said he was crazy because it was so hot, why would you drink coffee. It took all these years later to figure it out.

Anyway, I, at least, found it ironic that the same day the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit threw out the FCC's fine against CBS for Janet Jackson's 'wardrobe malfunction,' Larry Mendte was charged with snooping his co-anchor's e-mail.
It turns out Mendte didn't just do it a couple of times, according to the authorities, he went into Alycia Lane's e-mail more than 500 times between January and May.
Now, let's give Mendte the benefit of doubt that he only got on to the e-mails at work and not at home. So, that means he was snooping five days a week for 20 weeks. That breaks down to, and I'm not a math wiz so forgive me if I'm off a bit, that works out to more than five times a day for that time period.
How many new e-mails does Lane get a day? We know from the stories she leads a party life, but wouldn't the party people be texting instead of e-mailing.
There must have been some pretty salacious things on that e-mail that kept Mendte going back again and again.
Did he print them out? Was there more than just bikini photos? Let's not go there.
So, it appears the next step is a guilty plea from Mendte.
In the world of television, that will keep him off the air for, what, six weeks. Remember, Marv Albert was accused of dressing in women's underwear and biting a woman on the shoulder. He was off the air for about two years.
Until then, the offer still stands for Mendte to keep busy by being a Rise and Shine correspondent.

Good Morning everybody!

So, ever notice how quick a vacation week fades away.
Spent the last week in Ocean City, N.J., which, by the way, can still be a sleepy town, but is only a stone's throw from becoming overrun like Wildwood.
Anyway, after arriving Saturday, the week ahead looked long and relaxing.
There was no need to head out to the boardwalk or the beach that first day, because, hey, we have a long week ahead.
Same the next day. Take it easy, go on a family walk, watch the boats on the bay.
By Tuesday, the week was still a long way away. 'I know, we'll play miniture golf, but just be patient. There's a long week ahead.'
By Thursday, the week is on the downslide and suddenly you feel like everything has to be packed into the day. Get up early, go for a walk, head to the beach, head to the playground, walk on the boardwalk, play games, play miniture golf, watch movies. There's not enough time in the day!
Friday, the finality of it all steps in. We have to get back to the real world, but let's pack in even more. Spend more time on the beach. Let the children play on the sand and in the surf.
What, leave already? Just 10 more minutes.
Finally, the sun is setting and it would be a good idea to do some pre-packing.
No, let's do more. Get some ice cream. Walk on the beach. See the lights. Watch the boats.
No. No. No. It can't be over. We are having too much fun. We are enjoying everything. We are having fun. Don't let the real world intrude.
HELP!

Good Morning out there!

Interesting thing, since we now have the opportunity to get reader comments on our Web stories you get a feel how small is the world.
This past week, we've gotten comments from Ireland, London and Hawaii. We've also gotten plenty of comments from non-exotic places like Georgia, Indiana and Marcus Hook, but it does speak to the power of the Internet.
Imagine that, Delaware County doesn't exist in some kind of bubble. What happens here catches the fancy around the world.

Anyway, found THIS STORY yesterday. For those who don't have time to read (you know how everybody is so busy now they can't barely leave their desks to hit the bathroom), it's about a new list of eight natural wonders.
There are mountains, streams, lakes and the such in places like Canada and Iceland, just to name a few.
So, it got me thinking, what about the wonders of Delaware County (there's not much nature, but, hey, we need more shops)? There has to be some, like the trash that washes up in the Hook. Or, the MacDade Mall. Or, those Grand Canyon-sized potholes that never get fixed on Baltimore Pike. Or, Duffer's.
On a side note, does those in County power should contact the Guinness Book of Records people. We have to have the greatest number of bars and pizza joints in any concentrated area in the world. Can't wait to hear from Kazakhstan to debate that record.
Then, there's this:

Good Morning, Delaware County!

Was flipping around the TV Channels (more than 57 channels, nothing's on and Larry Mendte's still out of work) before gathering everybody for bed when I came across the Marx Brothers' movie 'Horse Feathers.'
The plot, much like in most Marx Brothers movies, doesn't really matter. It was just a chance for everybody to laugh. If you've seen the movie, you know what I mean. If you haven't, run out and get a copy. It might be one of the funniest movies ever.
Anyway, while watching the movie, it became pretty obvious the boys were not interested. Anybody who has boys aged 9 and 6 know right away when something is not touching their fancy.
They, along with the Princess, wanted to watch something animated. Doesn't matter what, if it's animated it must be a children's show, right?
So, they were squirming, finally, one asked, "Daddy, what's wrong with the TV?"
Nothing, why?
"It's broken."
It's not broken, there's a good movie on.
"No, it's broken. There's no color. We can't watch anything without color, it gives me a headache."
Just watch the movie.

Well, the viewing lasted about five more minutes before it became obvious my attempt at getting them to watch something a little different wasn't going to work. So, it was off to bed.
The next day, there was a conversation in the office about movies. We have come to a time where movies are bigger and badder. The computer generation makes anything possible. Sure, there are smaller movies still being made, but they don't make a lot of money. Instead, junk like 'Transformers' or 'Alien vs. Predator' dull our senses.
We have advanced technologically enough that old films look quaint and 'cause headaches.'
I'll have to keep fighting the fight.

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

It's amazing the money being thrown out for professional athletes.
The 76ers are just the latest, giving forward Elton Brand 82 million reasons to leave Los Angeles for the East Coast.
Just last year, the Los Angeles Galaxy gave soccer star David Beckham $250 million to leave England for Hollywood.
In 2001, Alex Rodriguez was able to convince the Texas Rangers to give him a 10-year, $252 million deal.
You know, looking from here, it's all funny money. Except for feeding your ego, do you really need $100 million to play a game.
Sure, some players who get big deals stay in shape and help their teams win, but, more often than not it seems, that money goes to waste. Remember in 2002 when Jim Thome became the highest paid Phillie ever, taking a six-year, $85 million contract to jump away from Cleveland.
Sure, he hit some home runs and all, but the Phillies never won with Thome cashing his checks.
Back in the day, for those who remember back in the day, the Phillies actually started all this madness.
Early in 1979, the Phillies went out and gave Pete Rose (only the best hitter baseball has ever seen) a four-year, $3.2 million deal. OK, the first year the team didn't make the playoffs, but Rose stirred the Philies drink over those four years. They won three division titles, went to two World Series (of course, winning in 1980) and were a model other franchises followed.
Then the crazy money started. Philadelphia teams never seemed to be big players in this, which made the fans crazy.
Now, the 76ers are making a splash. Let's hope Elton Brand is the next Pete Rose.

Good Morning, Delaware County!

Look, I, like most people (men?), enjoy a new electronic gadget when it comes out.
I transferred all my record albums (yes, there used to be such an animal) to cassette tapes when it became obvious they were the future.
I ran to get a CD player when people still thought it just a fad.
I used to get a new watch every year because, well, because it had cool things. I had one with a stop-watch. One with an alarm. One that played a different song every hour. One that had a television remote control on the face that never really worked.
I stood in line when 'Pac Man' came out for the Atari system. I advanced to an Apple with a floppy drive. Then a PC with a CD and CD burner.
I like to play with Photoshop, Movie maker, music rippers, iTunes. It's fun to recut a movie to my 'director's cut,' although I don't think the original director would like it much.
Now, though, I give up because I can't keep up.
The money thing, sure, is a big thing, but the way technology keeps going, everything you buy is outdated a day later.
There's a new iPhone coming out this week. Last year, when the original iPhone debuted, people rushed out and got one. It's a cool thing, but the new one is cooler. There's word of a better one coming out in December and some of the phones being used in Tokyo put everything else to shame.
So, to rush out and get one this week or next week is just silly. In a few months, you'll feel cheated by the new one.
We need a slow down on the gadget front. I need to catch up.

Good Morning, Delaware County!

Hope everybody is recovering from the July 4th Holiday Weekend. Isn't it nice when these holidays fall on a Friday? It's never fun to have July 4 fall on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Those years, you have a day or two of work, take a day off for a picnic and some revelry, stay up too late to see fireworks, then have to get to work the next moring.
When it's on a Friday, though, you get that little extra buffer. Seems like more of a break.

Speaking of breaks, today is the official start of the 'Running of the Bulls' in Pamplona, Spain. While this annual event offers some good video, maybe it's time to give the bulls a break.
After all, they are just animals running down the street. All those goofballs trying to run away are only making them angrier. Of course, it does appeal to some and they seem to have fun even though nine have already been injured
It was at least made funny in the movie 'City Slickers.'
Anyway, here's the start of last year's festival, after that check out a 'Running' that should be more popular and leave the bulls alone:

Good Morning, Delaware County!

So, one of those great studies where people are paid a lot of money to find out something useless, actually came up with an unexpected result.
Apparently, scientists in Texas were studying the watermelon. Well, through their studies they found watermelon contains a compound that has the same effect as Viagra.
That's right. The drug with the annoying commercials and the scary warnings has the same effect as eating watermelon.
CHECK OUT THE WHOLE STORY HERE.
In case you have to rush out to the fruit stand and don't have time to read the whole story, here's what the researcher said: "Arginine boosts nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, the same basic effect that Viagra has, to treat erectile dysfunction and maybe even prevent it," said Bhimu Patil, a researcher and director of Texas A&M's Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center (By the way, wouldn't you like to work at something called the Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center). "Watermelon may not be as organ-specific as Viagra, but it's a great way to relax blood vessels without any drug side effects."
You know, those side effects like death.
Anyway, watermelon tastes a whole lot better than oysters.

Good Morning, Delaware County!

While searching around for some good reads, I found this.
The question is: If a giraffe can lead a revolution, what's next?
It's funny because anything involving animals doing something different is funny. Just look at the movies, this summer there's going to be a movie about chimps going to space and another about little dogs taking over the world.
Why do we find animals so funny?
Then again, anything's worth a laugh.
Imagine if the lions and tigers at the zoo got together one night and decided to take over. They would be unstoppable.
How about if the circus elephants wanted to take a walk? Would you stand in the way?
How about if apes took over society? Wait, that already happened:

Good Morning, Delaware County!

A quick review:
Saw the movie 'Wall-E' at the theater Saturday afternoon.
Now, it's a pretty big deal, because with three little ones, an excursion to the movies is a huge undertaking. It has to be the right movie that will appeal to a 9-year old boy, a 6-year old boy and a 3-year old girl.
Believe it or not, those movies don't come around all the time. Plus, it has to appeal to the parents of the three so the 'it looks like a good video movie' doesn't come across their lips.
Thank God for Pixar. The movie company makes cool looking animated movies that has just enough to run across the age groups. Which, when you are talking about a 3-year old, means she can sit still for a quarter of the movie.
Anyway, 'Wall-E,' for those, you know, not in the know, is about the last robot on a trash-filled earth. Apparently, the humans, having finally trashed the planet, escaped in space have been floating around the final frontier for about 700 years.
Every once in a while, the humans send back probes to see if life has resurfaced on Earth.
Well, 'Wall-E' finds a plant during his trash-compacting duties. He comes in contact with the probe, becomes friends, goes to space, has some adventures, comes back and is saved by his new friend (girlfriend?).
Although there isn't a lot actual dialogue, the beeps and bumps of the robots say a lot and there is no loss in the story.
The most ironic thing about the movie is the subtle (well, banging over the head actually) message of overindulgence.
A company (Walmart, Disney) pushed so many needless products onto consumers they had no place to put all the trash. It took over the streets, oceans, everything.
That the movie was financed by Disney makes it all the more ironic.
You can't walk into any store without being beat over the head with Disney princesses. Believe me, there is no store around that doesn't have something with Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Belle and their friends smiling from a cup or dish or toothbrush or toilet paper.
It's a good movie to check out, but think, 'What is going to happen to all that trash?'

Good Morning, Delaware County!

You eat right. You try to stay active. Well, as active as possible with work and everything else that goes on in this crazy world.
You take walks. You maybe run around with the children. You play some baseball. Some basketball. Some football.
Then, you realize you're really not in 'good shape.' What to do?
As a youngster, riding bikes was a daily thing. We would ride our bikes around the neighborhood, to school, to the store, to the ice cream shop, to our friend's house. It really didn't seem like that big a deal.
Now, with gas prices so high it's tough to afford the trip to the store, how about getting a bike? Sounds like a great idea, huh? Used to do it all the time. It can't be that hard.
So, hopping on the bike as the breeze blew Sunday night sounded pretty easy. Just a short ride, to, you know, ease into things.
Then the pain starts. The seat doesn't feel the same as you remember. The pedals? They keep slipping from under your shoes. Shin splints would be a welcome relief to the pain now in your lower legs.
Forget bike riding, where's the couch? Then comes a voice from behind:
"Come on Dad! Let's go a little longer! This is fun!"
The pain disappears. Let's Go!

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

While watching the fallout from the Supreme Court ruling on guns Wednesday, I sat here amazed. Do we really need to hoard a bunch of guns in our homes? Sure, if the Russians are coming through Alaska maybe, but really? A lot of people like to say: 'Guns don't kill people, people kill people.'
My answer is: 'People with guns kill a lot more people than pictures of guns in a book.'
It's going to be a debate that's never going to die, unless it's shot down by another ruling.

Another interesting case came to light this morning when a Washington woman was sentenced for helping the so-called 'Nigerian e-mail scam.'
According to the story: Edna Fiedler pleaded guilty in March to attempting to defraud U.S. citizens in a scheme known as a Nigerian check scam.
Fiedler helped her accomplices in Nigeria send fake checks to people who had agreed to cash the checks on behalf of the sender, keeping some of the proceeds and sending the rest back.
Of course, when the bank found out the checks were fakes, the unsuspecting dupe was caught holding the bag.
According to the story, Fiedler had sent out checks totaling $609,000. Authorities also found fake checks totaling $1.1 million in her home.
She gets two years in prison.
Here's a better punishment: Make Fiedler go in person to everyone she smoked and explain herself. Then, make her clean their place, mow the lawn, whatever. Instead of sitting in jail, work the money off.

Then there's this from the Asbury Park-Press: BARNEGAT — A report of a ninja sighting in the woods near the Robert L. Horbelt elementary School prompted a brief lockdown of the township's public schools before
authorities realized the suspect in question was actually a camp counselor heading toward a costume party.
Shortly after 9 a.m., police received a call from a librarian at the local Ocean
County Library branch on Burr Street reporting that a man dressed as a ninja, carrying a large sword, was running through the woods, Lt. Patrick Shaffery said. Police than initiated a lock-down of the five schools as a precaution, police said.

Yes, we've officially entered it:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

Somebody a lot smarter than me had a suggestion a couple of days ago.
With such a large amount of interest in celebrities (both real and believed), this smart person suggested we add some kind of local celebrity news to delcotimes.com.
It could just work, but there needs to be some eyes from the community.
For instance, if you see David Landau and Charlie Sexton having lunch, snap a quick photo or just drop a line to let us know. Of course, if that happens, maybe we are closer to the alien invasion. I'm sure many in Delco would like to know if Larry Mendte is reading the Daily Times want ads while catching a bite at Pizza Hut or if Paula Brown is shopping at the Acme.
So, let's get those celebrity sightings going. What's going on out there?

Speaking of celebrity, notice how we put that label on a lot more people these days.
Way back in 2002, celebrities were mostly movie stars, music stars or some other kind of entertainment star. Now, you can become a celebrity by making an idiot of yourself on television.
Take, for instance, the show 'America's Got Talent.' Having caught a couple of minutes of that show this week, I have to say America doesn't have talent. Sure, there are a few good performers out there, but most were just terrible. Somehow, they thought they could entertain somebody besides their family.
Then again, they are on television, so if you see them...
Speaking of politicians and celebrities, at least he's not our Governor:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

Haven't heard from Larry Mendte yet, but the shock from getting fired by Channel 3 is still probably too much to handle.
Anyway, I want to up the offer for the disgraced former anchor. Instead of just adding content to Rise and Shine, how about a Larry Mendte unemployment blog. Just think of the possibilities.
We have have a former TV anchor trying to get a job at Wawa or wondering around town. We can read about the trials and tribulations of being a former television personality. Hey, maybe we can even get some of that hidden humor.
Here's a good one, let's have Larry Mendte go back to Lansdowne and find some of his old neighbors and friends. Maybe sit in the Regency and talk about coffee.
Sounds like a winner.
By the way, one other incentive for poor Larry. I'll even let him read my e-mail any time he wants as long as he doesn't forward any of my bikini shots.
Come on, Larry. Let's get it going. Maybe it's not as impressive as the 11 o'clock news, but, hey, you have to keep your name out there somehow.
I'm up for anything. We even have an open desk next to Gil Spencer. I'll set up a camera and listen in on that banter. Sounds like fun.
Just in case you've forgotten Larry Mendte already, here's a classic that bears repeating:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

So, CBS3 pulled the plug on Larry Mendte yesterday. The Delco-born television news reader is out of a job for the moment, probably heading down to the coffee shop in Chestnut Hill to drown his sorrows.
Or something like that. Unlike others who have been fired over the last few months, Mendte won't have much trouble finding a new job.
Still, he will have a lot of time on his hands for the short term. To that end, how about this. Here's an offer for Mendte to bring is, well, unique brand of humor to the rest of the world. How about a video blog, Larry. Send along some clips and we'll check them out here at Rise and Shine and post them. You never know, it might just work.

Speaking of those speaking, does Don Imus really not get it or is he just trying to drum up some ratings buzz.
During a show Monday morning, he made what many consider another racist comment.
You be the judge, here's what was said:
During an on-air conversation about the arrests of suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones, Imus asked, "What color is he?"
Told by sports announcer Warner Wolf that Jones, who used to be nicknamed Pacman, is "African-American," Imus responded: "There you go. Now we know."

Of course, Imus, who is never at a lack for words, said he was misunderstood. He was trying to say Jones was being picked on because he was black.
I think Don Imus is too old and stupid to be on the air. These kinds of radio shows, be it Imus, Rush, or whoever do nothing but spread hate. Whatever happened to just playing music on the radio.

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think so...
Anybody notice how we keep hearing about how high gas prices are getting, but we really aren't offered any solutions. Sure, we're told to cut down our driving, walk more, ride bikes or stay closer to the house. Really, though, how can we do that?
We have to get to walk. We need to stock up our kitchens. We need to get the children to the library, to the park or to the pool. We need to get around. It's not like the public transportation system offers much help. Have you ever tried to board a bus while only carrying a $5 bill? The driver doesn't even laugh. You have to find change somewhere.
It reminds me of the movie 'Falling Down' starring Michael Douglas. It's about a guy who is just fed up with everything. He takes matters into his own hands and just tries to get home. The ending ruins the better parts of the movie, but it might have been a little bit ahead of its time.
We're all getting fed up with high prices and the like. You shouldn't have to work three jobs just to make ends meet. If this truly is the 'Greatest Country in the World' as we like to say, then we need to get a handle on everything. The divide is getting too big. We need to take care of each other.

By the way, comedian George Carlin died Sunday. It's kind of tough to find a video of him without language that, well, would offend some.
It's not impossible, though, and here's a classic:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

Let's get this right out in the open. I never really fancied myself an athlete. Sure, I played sports as a youth and into my mid-20s, but it was for fun. I got into baseball at a young age and found the game to be something great.
I went probably the first two years of playing without getting a hit. I was the child put into right field, because 'nobody hit it to right field.'
I tried, though. I practiced hitting (thanks Dad for making me swing the bat about 5 million times on the front lawn). I practiced throwing. I had catches. I think, by the end of my youth playing days, I was decent enough a player. I no longer was put into right field. I played all the outfield positions. Some first, some third then went to catcher.
Anyway, it's a long way of saying, to me, baseball was a great time. Most of the time frustrating, but it was a great time. I enjoyed putting on the uniform, walking down to the field, taking infield, having batting practice.
I always tried to get No. 1 when they handed out the uniforms, by the way. That way when I would put my name on the brim of the cap, I could always write 'Vince Carey, No. 1.' Of course, my Mom thought I had a high opinion of myself, but, so what.
Where does this get us? Well, last night, while waiting for the Westbrook Park Phillies to play the Orioles, it became obvious there weren't going to be enough players to field two teams.
So, the coach had a bright idea, how about having the Dads play the kids. Great, get the glove and pretend to be young again.
It certainly was a good time. Seeing two little boys waiting in the outfield for the ball while a little girl cheered from the dugout made a beautiful night perfect.
After a game, which, by the way, featured some pretty good laughs coming mostly from the play of the Dads' team, everybody went home.
That's when the aches started. The legs were heavy. The feet (maybe I shouldn't have played in sandals) didn't much like standing.
Forget youth, get the Ben Gay.

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

Read an interesting story yesterday about the future. You can READ IT HERE If you have a chance, let me know what you think at vcarey@delcotimes.com
Recently, there has been a lot of talk about the death of the newspaper business. Much like other things, it's time to evolve, not die. We need to fully embrace the 'new media.' If that means changing the way we do things, so be it. We no longer have the luxury of waiting 10 hours to break a story. If it's not on our Web site within 10 minutes, we've lost something.
Maybe the best way to teach an old dog new tricks is to use a taser. Hey, it worked Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood.

Anyway, you never really notice how going to school is able to keep children a little bit calmer until the summer hits.
For the past nine months, with school in full force, there wasn't a whole lot of energy in three young ones I know by dinnertime.
Getting up early, getting the school, doing the work, doing the homework, eating. It all zapped them. Sure, there were a few moments, but ...
Now, there is no school and the energy level, if harvested, would solve any energy problem this country is facing.
I actually watched as the three ran around the living room for 30 minutes straight without stopping. They only stopped when Dad got dizzy from watching.
Maybe this will work:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

So, while the Phillies bats were sleeping last night, I was able to check out a show put on by the American Film Institute that counted the Top 10 movies in different kinds of genres. You know, the Top 10 westerns, Top 10 comedies, Top 10 gangster films, etc.
All the usual suspects were there, including the 'Usual Suspects.' Of course, we were going to see 'The Godfather,' 'Raging Bull,' '2001,' blah, blah, blah.
The thing about great movie lists is pretty much everybody agrees what the great movies are and they are all going to be there. Sure, it was interesting to see some of the stars of the movies talk about them, but they were quick interviews and we were moving on to the next number.
There are movie lists everywhere nowadays. We have the best movie kiss, the best movie villains, the best movie heroes. Again, blah, blah, blah.
So, while thinking about it, we need some new movie lists. So, to help you with your summer viewing lists, here are few.

The Top 10 Jim Varney movies

10. Earnest goes to camp; 9. Earnest saves Christmas; 8. Earnest Goes to Splash Mountain; 7. Earnest Rides again; 6. Slam Dunk Earnest; 5. Earnest Goes to Africa; 4. Earnest in the Army; 3. Earnest goes to School; 2. Beverly Hillbillies; 1. Earnest goes to Jail.

The Top 10 Movies Filmed in Delaware County

10. A Gentleman's Game; 9. Monday Morning; 8. Butterfly Angels; 7. The Presenter; 6. Misdirected; 5. Always Will; 4. Jersey Girl; 3. One Last Thing; 2. TAPS; 1. Eddie and the Cruisers.

The Top 10 Movies You Never Admit to Watching

10. The Fourth Man; 9. Ghoulies IV; 8. Anything with Sylvester Stallone; 7. Look Who's Talking 1-3; 6. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians; 5. Catwoman; 4. Jaws: The Revenge; 3. Soul Plane; 2. Staying Alive; 1. Earnest Goes to Jail

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

OK, I'll admit it first: I tape television shows and fast-forward through the commercials.
It's not that I don't appreciate the need for advertising. I know buying things makes our country go around, it's just that commercials are annoying.
It's bad enough the shows on television are mostly stupid, but, adding the commercials, can make the headache last even longer.
Over the years, there have been some inspired ads. Ones that made us laugh.
Yet, after the four millionth time it runs in an hour, even those are annoying.
For instance, there is a commercial running right now for a new car equipped with a rear-review camera. A bunch of nudists crash on a road, are offered a ride, and hilarity ensues. Well, actually, it was funny the first couple of times, but it's just annoying after seeing it all the time.
There are some just annoying from the first viewing.
Cheerios, that old breakfast cereal we ate as a youth because our mothers were conned into thinking it was good for us, is the latest to 're-invent' itself.
There's no doubt you've seen these ads where two annoying people talk about the 'benefits' of eating Cheerios. Mostly, to help lower cholesterol. One has a guy doing housework while his wife eats. They have some kind of bet. In my mind, they both win and should leave us alone.
In fact, get all these annoying people off the air.
Here, though, is the way it's supposed to be done:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

OK, I'm starting to think technology is going to take over the world.
Remember the 'Terminator' movies where machines became stronger than man and tried to eliminate all humans. Sure, it was dumb science fiction filled with lots of holes, but...
It's not like it's bad enough we are paying more than $4 for a gallon of gas. Now, cars are breaking down. I've seen more cars on the side of the road with the hood up this year than in more I can remember.
Two weeks ago, a hose burst in the van, sending engine coolant all over the place. Got that fixed quick and drove around for a little bit.
Then the starter went. Great, need to get that fixed.
Now, the breaks are rubbing. It's like you can never win.
Heck, you can't even change the bag in a vacuum cleaner without having the right tools. Or how about that DVD player that just decides one day it won't play any more movies. Great, now it's time to got to Best Buy. Well, at least somebody in the house is sweet enough to make the trip.
Anybody who tried to log on on to DelcoTimes.com last Friday might have felt the same way.
The system, which was shut down for maintenance very early Friday morning was supposed to be back working by 4 a.m.
At 5 a.m., it was obvious that deadline was going to be missed. By 6 a.m., having seen enough server failures over the last few months, it became obvious this was going to be a day-long battle. By 10 a.m., the updates said 'IT was working on it.' The same message came through at 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m., Noon ... and on and on.
We were finally back on line in the early evening, but none of Friday's news could be posted. It appears to be fine today and most of Friday's stories are posted in hour headline lists. So, if you want to read a story, it does appear on the site.
Everything back to normal? Well, when technology takes over, that's a relative term.
Much like British comedy:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

A day later, 14-month old Nicholas McCorkel clings to life.
Everybody is rooting for the little boy to pull through. To be able to overcome being left in a locked car for five hours while the heat rose into triple digits.
Some of the comments about the incident, though, leave me wondering.
How anybody, I don't care what the circumstances, could leave anybody in a car for five hours is just unbelievable.
There are no excuses. To say you forgot is unacceptable. You can forget your lunch in the car. You can forget to bring your movies back to Blockbuster. You can forget to take the bills to the post office.
You can not forget a 14-month old in the back of a car on the hottest day of the year. If the law says there is no prosecution for this, the law should be changed.
Done and done.

Now that I have that off my chest, how about something lighter?
For some reason, Forbes.com has to give us a list of the most powerful celebrities in the world.
Do we really need to know who is a powerful celebrity? Why do we care so much about celebrities and who exactly makes them powerful?
This year, the top five are: Oprah, Tiger, Angelina, Beyonce, Beckham.
If you care, HERE IS THE COMPLETE LIST
Great, Oprah has a lot of money, so that makes her powerful. Tiger can play golf and has dumb razor commercials. Angelina and Beyonce act or sing or something. David Beckham is a soccer player.
Somehow, they are to the cream of the crop. They can do anything. Great for them. How about helping the rest of us.
By the way, the list goes to 100 with cook Paula Deen bringing up the rear.
So, if Paula Deen shows up on Oprah, does she say: "OK, Y'all, I'm knocking you off your perch. Watch out, here comes Paula Deen. Y'all"
Probably not. I think you are stretching for a list that includes not only Paula Deen, but Racheal Ray (No. 76) and Judge Judy (No. 40), but doesn't include Homer Simpson.

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

It's truly amazing and, maybe, a bit unbelievable.
We've become a nation built on fear.
There was a time, probably not so long ago, where we weren't cowering in our milk. We weren't hiding inside our houses. We weren't dreading the next day before this day even begins.
This, at least in one opinion, started back in 1999. Remember when we were told to hoard canned goods and water because, 'Y2K was going to crash all our computers and render us helpless.' Well, that passed, but at least we had canned goods and water.
The tide really turned Sept. 11, 2001. The terrorist attacks on New York changed everybody, one way or another.
We no longer were safe, so we were told. We couldn't expect things to be so rosy. We were going into an extended version of the dark ages.
Heck, many of those who actually voted for good ol' W in 2004 said they did so because they needed to feel secure. A change in administration somehow was going to lead to the downfall of civilization.
Now, it's all about the economy. Turn on any of those 24-hour news stations and you'll hear how bad things are right now. You'll hear about how we are approaching more dark times. You'll hear how the stock market is going to collapse. You'll hear about money woes for everybody.
Yesterday, CNN, with it's 'Issue No. 1' is at the forefront of the fear-mongering, actually had an 'expert' who said we needed to have a year's worth of our salary squirreled away in case of something happening. Without that, forget about everything.
Hogwash.
Yeah, the economy is bad. It's also hot outside in June and gets cold in December. Everything runs in cycles. It gets bad, it gets better.
My grandparents used to tell stories about the Great Depression. About how they had to walk three miles to work for pennies, then try to feed their families. You know what, they made it through. They lived happy lives and were always singing.
Here's an idea: Tune out the fear. Don't listen to these so-called 'experts.' Remember, they are getting paid to make it sound bad and to get you to panic. The more you panic, the more they get paid.

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

Time, obviously, changes everything.
If you knew then what you know now, you might have done things completely different five years ago. You didn't, so you deal with it and try to change things.
Speaking of change:
After taking in the Star Wars exhibit at the Franklin Institute, the boys really started to get into the whole 'Star Wars' thing.
They wanted the figures. They wanted the games and, of course, they wanted to see the movies.
Having enjoyed the films when they first came out, it was fun to go back and experience it again.
Now, I saw the original films in the theater and maybe one other time on video or TV (can't remember which). It didn't become an obsession or religion like for other people.
When the 'new' chapters came out a few years ago, I didn't have any pressing need to see them. We did watch the third 'new movie' a few months ago on television, but found it overly long and a bit disappointing.
Anyway, the boys wanted to watch, so we saw the original (now called 'A new hope') and, last night, finished watching 'The Empire Strikes Back.'
Many may not remember, but the big scene where Darth Vader announces he is Luke's father was so shocking when it happened that it was talked about like a culture-changing event.
So, when the scene was coming up last night, I watched for reaction.
There was none. They already knew the twist. Of course, it didn't stop the enjoyment of the movie. In fact, it just guaranteed this weekend will be spent watching 'Return of the Jedi.'
This would probably have been more shocking:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

Just saw a news report on television telling me it's hot out there.
Just read a news report in the newspaper telling me it's hot out there.
Just heard on the radio it's hot out there.
Just walked outside and, know what, it's hot out there.
It's June in Pennsylvania. It's hot out there. We know it. We can feel it. We are paying outrageously high PECO Energy prices to get away from it.
Enough already. We know it's hot out there. It's like telling me we are paying too much for gas.
Here's a prediction: It's going to be hot in July and August as well.

Since that's out of the way, we can get to the real interesting thing of the day.
I was treated Saturday to a wonderful meal with great company at a Mexican restaurant in Philadelphia Saturday night.
It is a small place with an unbelievably stocked tequila bar, good food and good service.
Still, the best part of the night was being able to eat, enjoy talking, joke and relax. Every once in a while, despite the world outside, it's nice to escape and forget about the pressures we all face.
Forget the heat. Forget the high fuel costs. Forget the bills. Forget the yelling. Forget schools. Forget arguments.
Even for a couple of hours, it's nice to escape.

Rise and Shine

GOOD MORNING, DELAWARE COUNTY!

Thursday was a pretty nice day.
Sure, the clouds dominated the sky, but it actually worked out well.
The Small Business Administration held its annual awards ceremony at Citizens Bank Park.
Actually, it was a tent outside the ballpark. The first award went to Kathleen E. Carey, the Daily Times business writer. She received the Journalist of the Year award. After a rousing 'thank you' speech (which many questioned if she was a professional speaker), the day was rolling.
It's actually pretty impressive to see more than 500 business leaders in one place at one time. Probably a good place to pick up some ideas or advertising.
Then it was into the ballpark.
To tell the truth, with three children, it's a bit of a chore to head down to the game. The younger ones are focused on the playground. From the moment they reached the seats, it was 'Can we go to the playground? Can we go to the playground? I want to go to the playground! Playground! Playground!'
Of course, in my thinking, you can go to a playground any time you want that doesn't cost $18 to get into.
What was really fun about the afternoon was sitting in the stadium with a 9-year old boy who really never watched a game before. He was jumping up and down. Cheering for the Phillies. Basically having a grand old time.
I was lucky as a youngster. A neighbor had season tickets to the Phillies, three rows behind the visitor's dugout. A few times a month, he would give us the tickets. I learned to love watching the game.
Of course, it kind of grew into an obsession. Phillies. Phillies. Phillies. I kept score, followed every game. Still, it was fun.
Maybe that seed was planted in another generation on a cloudy afternoon.

Rise and Shine

GOOD MORNING, DELAWARE COUNTY!

By the by, I forgot about the Viagra ads that come flooding into e-mails. Not that, you know, somebody was snooping for that.

Anyway, there was a popular book some years back called 'All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten.'
While the book is more of a life philosophy, the title is what got me thinking.
Is it true? Do we learn during our first year of 'formal' school than the rest of the years?
Probably for our basic needs. Still, anybody who sat complaining in algebra class know that now you need that math every day.
What got me thinking about this is my son, Brendan, is completing his last day of kindergarten today.
He's starting to read. He's starting to add. He's starting to see the world in a different way.
I guess you do grow up a bit after kindergarten. While he's been going to school for a few years now, this is really the first year of learning. Preschool teachers set the basics for things. They learn the days of the week, colors, etc. When they get to the next level, though, it's time to get everything down.
Reading, Writing and 'Rithmetic.
To tell the truth, the learning is stunning. Here's a boy who last year had a tough time writing his name, but now his penmanship is better than mine. He honestly sits down with books now and reads the words. He doesn't just look at the pictures.
He's learning to count. He knows the difference between pennies and dimes.
I give all the credit to his teachers. Think about it for a minute. Here you are faced with a classroom of 5- and 6-year olds. While they are in school, they aren't necessarily 'in' school.
Their attention span is, well, limited. Somehow, though, they learn. Somehow they get it done.
Maybe the book is right.
So for all you kindargten graduates out there, I give you this:

Rise and Shine

GOOD MORNING, DELAWARE COUNTY!

OK, it's taken a couple of days to figure it out, but we now know why Larry Mendte felt the need to break into Alycia Lane's e-mail account.
It wasn't to get his hands on those famous bikini shots or to dig for some dirt on his former anchor co-host at Channel 3.
No, Mendte must be feeling the financial crush we are all living with these days. There's no doubt, Mendte, who grew up in Lansdowne (throw a stone), must have been trying to get a little bit of that Nigerian money.
Lane, who was fired by the station back in December after she supposedly slapped a New York City cop, must have let Mendte know about the free money being given away every day via e-mail.
Heck, my Yahoo account has 3,512 e-mails about free credit cards, free stuff from Target and those frozen accounts in Africa.
Just looking quickly, I can work at home and make $200,000 a year. I can get $250,000 in life insurance for just a buck.
So, why do we need to work?
Here's a good week, living via e-mail:
After working at home an hour a day and making $50,000, I can take the car to Bloomingdales for my free Bloomies and then head over to Olive Garden for a free meal.
Heading home around noon, I can stop off at Target and use my free Visa card to pick up some new clothes.
Now comes the tough part. I have to decide between a free trip to Las Vegas, a weekend in Cancun or maybe a few days in Costa Rica.
That can wait, though, first I have to e-mail my bank account, social security number and address to somebody in Zaire who has a secret stash of money. It's really a sad story, apparently her father was killed by her uncle, but not before her father put $10 million in a secret bank account. If I send my information to this person, I can keep $8 million for myself.
You know, if I do that, I won't need all this free stuff.
So, I can certainly understand why Larry Mendte would check out somebody else's e-mail. Still, while he's sitting at home with no work, I want to help out.
This morning, I created Larry_mendte@yahoo.com.
That should make it easier. Just send me a note, Larry, and I'll send along the password. You too can get the benifit of e-mail solicitations.
Speaking of Larry Mendte:

Rise and Shine

GOOD MORNING, DELAWARE COUNTY!

Well, as we get down to the end of another school year, it's time to think about what to do during the summer.
Way back when, parents maybe went on a vacation for a week during the summer, did a couple of day trips, then let the children fend for themselves the rest of the summer.
It was fun to go away, but it was maybe more fun to spend the entire day with friends. Even if it was just sitting around in the shade, there was a simplicity to it that just seemed right.
Maybe there'd be a quick baseball game or football game. There was a lot of bike riding and running around.
You would eat breakfast, come back for lunch, then be back again at dinnertime. After dinner, there was more outside time until it got too dark to see.
Now, you can't let the children play outside, even on your front lawn, without keeping an Eagle eye on them.
There are too many dangers out there. The question is, are the dangers more now or are we just more conscious of them?
Well, I think the dangers have exploded as the years have gone along. Sure, there were plenty of predators out there in the 1970s, but maybe they weren't so out in the open.
We didn't have to worry about cars pulling up with somebody looking to hurt children. We didn't have to worry about so many people running around with weapons. We, and I mean both parents and children, didn't have to worry about such serious things.
Now, we have to have camps and planned activities for children. They miss out a lot now. We need to get back to simpler times.

Rise and Shine

GOOD MORNING, DELAWARE COUNTY!

While sitting here thinking about how I'm going to get to work now that gas has reached the $4 mark, I was wondering:

If the movie 'Sex and the City' is for women only, why do they push the 'Sex' part and not the 'City' part?
If the Phillies keep scoring all those runs here at the end of May, does that mean they'll set a team record for being shut out in June?
If the Lakers (who are already there) and Celtics play in an NBA Championship reunion, will it be long before The Human League gets back on the stage?
Is that really a bear wondering around Bucks County, or just a neighbor having a bad hair day?
Why can't an oil company make a mistake and come to my house and fill the tank?
Does anybody really pay attention any more to the Billboard Hot 100?
If an alien spaceship is monitoring Earth right now, are they laughing or crying?
If Harrison Ford, 65, can come back as Indiana Jones, why can't Clint Eastwood make another 'Every Which Way but Loose?'
How many people actually read these posts?
When I win the Powerball, will I continue to work for two weeks or just never return?
Is it to safer to swim off the shore of Atlantic City or Marcus Hook?
If I drive the speed limit and actually stop at stop signs in Delaware County, will I get pulled over for 'eratic driving?'
Which is true: 'Money can't buy you love' or 'Money don't get everything it's true, but what it don't get I can't use.'
If George W. Bush was around in 1776, would the Constitution include a 'lying for the sake of improving political standing' clause?
Why have we become a society that does nothing but complain instead of seeing the beauty around every day?
Is a 'scumbag' just a drug dealer or any kind of criminal?
Why do public schools have to put so much pressure on children starting in kindergarten that they hate school by second grade?
Why can I drive to Delaware to get a big screen TV, but get pulled over for purchasing a bottle of wine?
While Starbucks is taking over the world, why are there so few in Delaware County?
If I promise to give 50 cents to a charity, will you send me a dollar?
Who comes up with those people poll questions?
Can Fox News actually offer an unbiased opinion?
Isn't this one of the funniest video clips or all time:

Rise and Shine

GOOD MORNING, DELAWARE COUNTY

Way back when, there was a classic episode of the television show 'WKRP in Cincinnati' where they decided to do a drunk driving test.
There was a police man in the studio with DJs 'Dr. Fever' and Venus Flytrap. They were fed shots every few minutes or so and then tested on their reaction time.
Of course, hilarity ensued when Fever actually improved his reaction time until seeing a pig and chicken fighting in the hallway.
Well, maybe you had to be there.
SO, what got me thinking about a 1970s television show. Well, a dedicated reader sent this along last week: Check it out
It is kind of interesting, but also quite addictive. So, after taking care of the sheep, here's the episode of WKRP in Cincinnati. Take a break for a good laugh:

Rise and Shine

GOOD MORNING, DELAWARE COUNTY!

Ever wonder why there is so much hype for upcoming movies?
There are stories about people lining up for the new 'Sex and the City' movie for over a week now. The film doesn't officially open until Friday.
I understand being excited about seeing a favorite story or whatever becoming a movie and heading to the theater.
But still, lining up a week before the showing?
Of course, this isn't the first time its happened and it won't be the last.
I remember, way back in time, when the 'Empire Strikes Back' was scheduled to come out. People lined up the day of the movie, got the tickets and sat down to watch.
Of course, when the 'Return of the Jedi' came out, there were longer lines and they started earlier. Still, unless I've blocked it from my mind, I don't remember the lines starting a week before the opening.
No, this is a more 'recent' thing. When the next batch of Star Wars movies started coming out, there were lines ahead of the opening. Of course, those lines also contained many people dressed as their favorite characters, so ...
Back in my youth, I stood in a couple of lines overnight. Once was to see Bruce Springsteen play at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh and another was to see the Rolling Stones play the Vet. At the time, it seemed worth it and kind of fun, especially when the beer started flowing and the pizzas were delivered.
Movies, though, are a different animal. They will probably be in the theaters through the summer, so there is plenty of time to see it.
Maybe I'm missing something with 'Sex and the City.' I only saw the show once and found it pretty boring. I'll probably never see the movie.
Then again, with gas prices out of hand and an unneccesary war still going on in Iraq, maybe we all need a break.
I'll be on the lookout for a few people dressed like Batman over the next few weeks.

Rise and Shine

GOOD MORNING, DELAWARE COUNTY!

Well, I guess it all has to do with perspective.
While doing some Internet research Monday for Rise and Shine I found this story about gas prices
Now, we were talking about breaking the $1 mark in 1999. Imagine somebody who fell asleep in 1998 and woke up 10 years later. Not would they have the culture shock of another George Bush in the White House, but they would probably craw back in bed with the $4 we are now spending on a gallon of gas.
Sure, riding a bike is one solution, but what else can we do?
We, unfortunately, are at the mercy of gas companies and whoever else is driving the price because we need our cars. SEPTA doesn't offer us a workable solution.
Anyway, it's funny about perspective.
When we were little we were content with just playing. Didn't matter the game. Didn't matter if there were rules. It was probably better if there were no rules.

Rise and Shine

GOOD MORNING, DELAWARE COUNTY!

It was only nine years ago, but it feels like a lifetime.
Let's look at some of the ways the world has changed before George W. Bush gave us a 'better' world.
In 1999, gas cost around $1.50 a gallon. Today, you're lucky if you can find a place that hasn't broken the $4 mark.
In 1999, the real estate market was starting to take off. Today, the rate of foreclosures are taking off.
In 1999, the price of a new Ford Taurus was, depending on options, around $17,000. Today, the price of a new Ford Taurus is, depending on options, around $25,000.
In 1999, the top song of the year was 'If you had my love' by Jennifer Lopez. The No. 1 song today is 'Lollipop' by Lil Wayne.
In 1999, many were hoarding water bottles and canned goods in fear of a computer meltdown for Y2K. Today, some are hoarding water bottles and canned goods in fear of a stock market meltdown.
In 1999, the most watched television show is 'Who wants to be a Millionaire.' Today, the top television show is 'American Idol.' Well, maybe there's no difference there.
In 1999, the nation was shocked as John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife and sister-in-law were killed in a plane crash. Today, the nation shrugs as Sen. Edward Kennedy is diagnosed with a brain tumor.
In 1999, the top movie of the year was 'Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace.' So far this year, the top grossing movie is 'Ironman.'
On May 26, 1999, the Phillies were being led by Curt Schilling and Ron Gant to a 23-20 record. Today, led by Cole Hamels and Chase Utley, the Phillies are 28-24. By the way, the Phillies ended the 1999 season 77-85 and third place in the N.L. East.
In 1999, 9-year olds were just 9-year olds, playing baseball, running around and enjoying things. Today, 9-year olds are faced with school pressures thanks to our President's 'Every Child Left Behind' (or something like that), but they still have fun and play baseball.
In 1999, after many long hours of labor, a special boy joined us and made the world a better place.
Happy Birthday Liam!

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

We are, by nature I think, visual beings. While we profess to believe a lot of things, until we see it with our eyes, it doesn't seem real. When some things become all too real, it can affect us in ways we never thought. Joy and sorrow are very powerful emotions. When they clash on a daily basis, when you can't understand what way you are 'supposed' to feel, we try our best to focus on the joy. It's how we get by.

Anyway, from the way things change file...
Watching television is like a treat in the house. The children are encouraged, as much as possible, to play with toys or games instead of watching television.
There are those times, though, while making dinner or finishing a project, where the television helps out. It calms them down for a couple minutes so everything can be finished.
One day, as a 6-year old and 3-year old were bouncing around, dinner wasn't going to be finished unless they got out of the kitchen.
So, they were overjoyed when told they could watch some television.
Somehow, though, the remote control was hidden and they just turned the TV on and sat there.
About five minutes later, the yelling and screaming started and it became obvious they weren't watching whatever was being beamed through the cable.
All right, let's see what's going on.
So, since the remote control was nowhere to be found, the children didn't know they could just push the buttons on the front of the television to change the channel. Instead, Flavor Flav was ranting about something. A quick push of the button found Curious George instead. Hopefully, the damage is slight.
Well, at least the TV wasn't tuned to FoxNews.

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

So, how do you get back to a sense of normalcy in an abnormal situation? It's impossible, but we continue to try.

Earlier this week, on a night that was anything but springlike, the Westbrook Park Phillies were playing the Indians in a youth baseball game.
This being baseball and all, the number of children playing the game are starting to decline and the Phillies found themselves a couple of players short. They still wanted to play the game, so the 6-year old brother of one of the team members was talked into helping out.
Although he had a few Tee-ball games under his belt, 'real baseball' was entirely new. Heck, his older brother was only playing in his third game, so it was really new to him as well.
So, with the brothers manning center field (older) and right field (younger) the game was played.
The rest of the Phillies welcomed their 'new teammate,' despite him wearing a Braves hat, and were having fun going out and playing. The cold, biting wind didn't even seem to matter.
Each brother were able to get hits throughout the game, although the younger boy was out at third base each time.
That is, until the final inning. With a Braves hat helping hold the batting helmet on his head, the younger brother was stading on third as the older brother stepped to the plate.
A ground ball that had eyes and went into the outfield ended the game by bringing the small boy home.
The players, on both teams, celebrated. Bringing big smiles to everybody who had gathered to witness the game.
Doesn't get any better:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

By now, most readers know or have heard about the sadness going through the Daily Times newsroom. Of course, it's not centralized here. The sadness is spread throughout the county and beyond.
It's not something you are 'supposed' to go through. To not be able to see the smile again will leave a hole in our hearts forever.
It will never heal, but, because it's how we deal with things, we move on. We try to forget, but that's not possible.
So, we listen to the bird sing. We watch children enjoy a game. We search for any kind of happiness, no matter how small.
That flower that wasn't growing at all is suddenly blooming. We say 'Good Morning,' 'Good afternoon,' 'Good evening' to people at work and on the street. We hold the door for a second longer at the Wawa.
We maybe lay off the horn for a few days while driving. We give the benefit of the doubt to the woman who has 12 items in the 10 items or less line.
We watch the sun rise. We watch the sun set. We marvel at the shape of clouds. We notice the Cardinal flying through the trees.
We wonder at the 3-year old practicing ballet. We cheer an 8-year old and 5-year old playing baseball. We are in awe of all the work Mom does at home while balancing work.
We try to find the best out in the world so we don't have to think about the loss. We'll never forget, the hole will never actually heal, but we'll shield it off. We'll battle through.

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

You know, sometimes something happens that just kicks you in the gut like no other event. You can't wrap your mind around it. You can't justify it. You can't figure it out. All you can do is go through the motions for a couple of days until you can accept it.
As we go through our normal routine, sweating over small and perceived big things, death makes no sense. Certain deaths make even less sense. Sometimes, talking about it makes it even more confusing.
Sorry, I had a story about a good friend who took his own life in 1990. The stomach won't allow it.
