Politics? I need an aspirin

Good Morning and here we are again!

Yes, we have reached that season again. No, not the one you are thinking about (although, I did see an unnamed local store putting up Christmas lights last week).
We have reached the never-ending political season.
I see Tom Wolf attacking Tom Corbett. I see Tom Corbett attacking Tom Wolf.
I get e-mails from Republicans attacking President Obama. I get e-mails from President Obama (well, not really it's some kind of auto-bot) attacking the Republicans.
I get phone calls. I get candidates knocking on my door. I get things in the mail (people still send things through the mail?).
AHHHH. Enough already.
All of this information just turns me off. By the time November comes along, I'll be ready to move to Sweden. (Do they have elections in Sweden?)
Just like I don't want to see Halloween stores popping up in August, I don't want to hear from political candidates until, well, how about late September.
It's all spin anyway.
Yes, we know you hate the other side. You will never work together. Blah, blah, blah.
I'll make my decision on your record, not on your rhetoric.

Rise and Shine --- Oh, those commercials

Good Morning and, man, I'm glad tomorrow is election day!
Seriously, the next time I see Tom Smith's mother, she better be starring in the Estelle Getty role of a 'Golden Girls' remake. By the way, Tom, you are the single most annoying candidate in about 100 years and there is no 'w' in 'Bob.'
One more time I hear Mitt Romney say he's going to personally create 12 million jobs I might just crack. I don't care what Colin Powell thinks. I certainly don't have any interest in Bucks County or New Jersey.
Is it just me or have these political ads just been about the worst ever? There's no break either. It's one after the other after the other.
I just saw Bill Clinton campaigning for Kathleen Kane, followed by the Mittster telling me about jobs. By the way, Mitt, if the White House is going to create 12 million new jobs, isn't the government going to get a helluva lot bigger?
They are all just bad and annoying. I didn't think I could get any more annoyed until I saw the Pennsylvania Lottery commercial with the guy going around giving scratch-off tickets to his friends as Christmas (sorry, Holiday) gifts.
"Hey what a great gift ... you cheap bastard!"
I think I'm going to DVR all my shows until the end of the year.

Rise and Shine --- Heavy eyes

Good Morning and welcome to a glorious new day!

Now, after working at nights for nearly 20 years, I never knew anything about the morning. After all, when you get home after 2 a.m., the morning was just something to sleep through.
For the past three years, I've been starting work around 4:30 a.m. Last night, I had to do a quick transition thanks to election day.
Let me tell, you, today is going to drag. Still, it's fun to be in the newsroom on election night, especially during a night of upsets.
So, now it's time to think ahead to November.
Thank goodness for coffee.

Rise and Shine --- Rain and the polls

Good Morning and welcome to a perfect day for ducks ... or political candidates!

You know, they say when it rains about half of those who were going to vote, will stay away from the polls. When it's 'just' a primary election like today, the best we can hope for is about five percent of eligible voters to hit the button.
So, is it much ado about nothing? Well, let's ask the people in Iraq if there is a 'meaningless' election.
Speaking of Iraq, the Daily Times award-winning Iraq correspondent has graciously accepted the challenge trying to follow Joe Sestak around today as he tries to unseat long-time Sen. Arlen Specter. You can follow the progress by CLICKING HERE.
She's doing all her coverage with an iphone. It should be really interesting.
On another completely different subject, I heard this song last night and thought I would put it on here. Songs don't usually bring tears to my eyes, but this one does:

Rise and Shine --- Get with the program

Good Morning and welcome to the rest of the year!

OK, now I get that schools have to play to many masters. I get that they need to stay somewhat away from politics. I get that some parents would become offended (offended?) if teachers talked about political candidates they didn't support. I get that 'No Child Left Behind' doesn't leave much time to actually teach students other than what may show up on a standardized test.
That's all fine and dandy. Yet, the day after we elected a new president, all that should be thrown out the window.
When a fourth-grader comes home and says the school 'is trying to avoid the election as best it can.' Well, that's just plain wrong.
The only way we can build on the unprecedented involvement of so many people this election season is to keep talking about it, especially to children.
Sure, they can't actually vote, but they can feel engaged. They can discuss things. They can do things other than the 'lesson plan.'
Those spelling words will still be studied. The math problems will get done. The testing pressures will still be there.
To ignore what's going on outside the doors is just plain wrong and every adult in the school should be held accountable.
Children want to learn. They do learn. They don't need to be ignored.

Rise and Shine --- What's next?

Good Morning and welcome to the down time!

So, we've had a World Series championship, a monster parade, Halloween and the most historic election in our history all in one week. That's right, one week.
We have to take a break now. It's time to sit back for a couple of days, weeks, whatever and figure out how we made it through these seven days.
Really, there weren't many breaks. Let's break it down:
Last Monday: World Series Game 5 part 1. Rain and more rain.
Last Tuesday: Rain, snow, winter in October.
Last Wednesday: Cold and World Series Game 5 part 2. That lead to late nights standing in line and celebrating.
Last Thursday: World Series hangover.
Last Friday: World Series parade. Halloween.
Last Saturday: Parade and Halloween hangover.
Sunday: Eagles vs. Seahawks in the late afternoon.
Monday: Election Day-eve. Senses bombarded by ads, rhetoric and robocalls.
Tuesday: Election Day. Barack Obama becomes first African-American President. More celebrations in the street.
So, it's time for a break. I don't want to hear about the stock market, the election, the Phillies (OK, we can still talk Phillies). Time to veg out. Take it easy. Get all that sleep back.
We need some brain candy:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning crazy school boys and girls and those who have to do a full day's work just getting them ready for school!

So, how about some straight talk?
The circus left town last night. Rest assured, if you missed it, another circus will certainly come through between now and November.
They shut down Media yesterday to get ready for the circus. The show went on, the performers walked on and then off the stage. Just wondering, though, if the McCain-Palin ticket makes it to the White House, does the bus go up on e-bay.
The next circus doesn't have any set dates, but a stage will be built somewhere in the county over the next few weeks. The performers, either the same or different ones, will get out of their vehicles. Sign some autographs and then move to the next town.
How's that for a whoop-de-doo review?
By the way, did anybody else find it ironic that when George W. Bush campaigned in Media four years ago he was relegated to the back of the courthouse. There was no stage, just a few hundred people.
Now, the television media reports when the candidates go to the bathroom, how many socks they own and if they clean the wax out of their ears.
We've come a long way... or maybe not.
